Our Story
We first met when working together in a mainstream school, where we found our professional ethos and values to be strongly aligned. As our careers evolved, we moved to different mainstream schools across the country and gained leadership experience. After a period we both found ourselves frustrated with the support available for those most in need in mainstream schools. We passionately believe that for some children the mainstream environment can be a hostile one. In some cases this can create a pattern of trauma and this then impacts on their ability to learn. The barriers to accessing education can be very complex and hugely challenging for the young person and their families.
As a result, we both left mainstream schools and both entered new roles within alternative provision. Here we provide education, support and careers guidance for children and young people who have significant barriers to attendance. During time in alternative provision settings across three counties, we have seen evidence of how, having the right approach, the right staff and the right environment, students can overcome barriers.
We saw young people transform into happy, sociable individuals that reengaged with their learning and future steps.
